okay, so all has been quiet on the recording front, so I thought I’d give you something to gnaw on: almost all of the guitar solos that I’ve made as a prequel to the video that I shall soon post.

  1. the first solo is from my Valhalla demo, made in my bedroom and garage back in 2010/2011 in Tennessee. The attempt was to make something that sounded like it came from Metallica c.1997, and so I hooked up the wah pedal, tuned my guitar to Eb and played whatever came to mind. It has been de-tuned to D for the sake of this compilation (to this day, I have not been able to re-create the perfect control of the wah pedal that I had on this solo).
  2. the second solo appeared on the as-of-yet untitled track featured here. It was a one-attempt, and, as many of my solos to come, has direct influence from Tony Iommi. It starts off slow, then breaks into a pentatonic scale lash, a la Zakk Wylde.
  3. this solo has also been published on my Orchestrations of Doom EP as is available for viewing here. While most of the tracks on that album featured keyboard only, I felt that one song should be different, and so re-listened to Ulver’s Themes from William Blake’s Marriage of Heaven and Hell as inspiration and came up with a song featuring only drum and bass. During the keyboard mid-section, an avant-garde solo was played over droning notes.
  4. the “Bloody Mary” solo! This one was about two thirds planned and one third improvised. The slow part that breaks into the fast mid-section was planned, but then while the song was being made, it was revealed that I had more time to go, so I wrote a dual-guitar piece, using a rather familiar melody. At the end of that, I found that I needed even more, so I improv’d a fast part, ending with a fading, repeating slide similar to “Stargazer”
  5. Heaven and Hell’s song “After All (The Dead)” never had a clear guitar solo, so, for the Bloody Mary EP, I thought I’d cover that song, since the main song took so much inspiration from that. The drumming came out horrible, so the song will never be posted, but the solo at the end showed some major improvement, including a tapping portion that was heavily influenced by the solo from Candlemass’ “Solitude.”
  6. While little material has been in the works during the 2012 year, due to conflicts with college, some things have been set in stone. One such was this dual-solo, complete with a duo hammer-on section and an ending part that wasn’t exactly as planned
  7. During the making of “Bloody Mary”, when I knew that I would be doing a dual-guitar part, I decided to attempt over-dubbing two guitars playing a dual-guitar solo. This is that attempt, a very rough version of the last movement of “Creeping Death”, with the last part slowed down to a very crushing, doom tempo.

enjoy!

A Rare Piece of Sabbath History

Witches gather at black masses
Bodies burning in red ashes
On the hill, the church in ruins
It’s the scene of evil doings’
It’s the place for all bad sinners
Watch them eating dead rat’s innards
I guess it’s the same
Wherever you may go, Oh LORD, yeah!

Carry banners which denounce the LORD
See me rocking in my grave
See them anoint my head with dead rat’s blood
See them stick the stake through me! Oh!

Don’t hold me back, ‘cuz I just gotta go
They’ve got a hold of my soul now
LORD’s got my brain instinct with blood obscene
Look in my eyes, I’m there enough…Yeah!

On the scene, a priest appears
Dead are falling at his knees
Satan sends out funeral pyre
Casts the priest into the fire
It’s the place for all bad sinners
Watch them eating dead rat’s innards
I guess it’s the same
Wherever you may go, Oh LORD, yeah!

Black Sabbath - Walpurgis

Daily Dosage of Metal CXCVII

(this song first appeared on a Metallica demo in 1982. That makes it a Metallica song by Dave Mustaine first and foremost in my mind. So you get both versions. No hating, please: Dave’s buried the hatchet and you should too)

Imagine you were at my station
And you brought your motor to me
You’re a burner, yeah, a real motor car

Said you wanna get your order filled
Make me shiver when I put it in
Pumping just won’t do, you know, lucky for you

Whoever thought you’d be better
At turning a screw then me
I do it for my life

Make my drive-shaft crank
Make my pistons bulge
Made my ball-bearing melt from the heat!

Oh yeah yeah!

We were shifting hard when we took off
Put tonight all four on the floor
When we hit top end, you know it feels too slow

Said you wanna get your order filled
Make me shiver when I put it in
Pumping just won’t do, you know, lucky for you

Whoever thought you’d be better
At turning a screw then me
I do it for my life

Make my drive-shaft crank
Make my pistons bulge
Made my ball-bearing melt from the heat!

Oh yeah yeah!

I’m giving you my room service
And you know it’s more than enough
Oh one more time, you know, I’m in love

Said you wanna get your order filled
Make me shiver when I put it in
Pumping just won’t do, you know, lucky for you

Whoever thought you’d be better
At turning a screw then me
I do it for my life

Make my drive-shaft crank
Make my pistons bulge
Made my ball-bearing melt from the heat!

Oh yeah yeah!
